In all of the Greek metropolis-states, apart from Sparta, women had very little freedom. It cannot be denied, however, that the social position of the Athenian lady was far inferior to that of the girl of the Heroic Age, and that, despite the boasted democracy and freedom of thought of the interval, lady's standing within the years of republican Athens was a reproach to the advanced tradition and love of the great and the gorgeous of which the city of the violet crown was the exponent.
